Contemporary Training - Improvisation
Max's training is a mixture of mental preparation, guided improvisation and physical fitness. The aim is to provide a flexible framework that allows dancers with different daily needs to access their own methods, to find their limits and challenge themselves. It provides a balance of internal awareness, external capabilities, and the oscillation between them. The class simultaneously focuses on coordination and stamina through conditioning exercises to address overlooked physical habits, alongside the freedom discovered in improvisational form.
1. Could you tell us a bit more about your approach to improvisation?
Intention is the most important element of improvisation for me. No matter what technique one comes from, or the specific goal; to know the shape and presence of one's own will is the most important. Additionally, when improvising we tend to follow physical sequencing habits, like working the same muscles in the same ways. So, I find it’s necessary to use stabalization and fitness exercises etc. in our warm up, as a way of making sure muscles are activated in more parts of the body then addressed in the improvisation alone.
2. Could you say a bit more about what you mean by challenging borders? What kinds of challenges are we dealing with?
The challenges will come as extremes and contradictions. How far can you take the extreme of an attribute or idea? How far is the complete opposite? How many layers of extremes are possible? How can we overwhelm ourselves? How can we isolate ideas yet not lose anything? How can we witness ourselves while being ourselves?
