In his latest work for the Massala Dance Company, Moroccan-French choreographer Fouad Boussouf – whose last piece NÄSS was featured at the Tanzfestival Rhein-Main 2018 – once again deals with the synthesis of traditional North African and Arab art and culture and hip-hop. Taking the legacies of great Arab divas such as Oum Kalthoum, Ismahan and Leila Mourad as his point of departure, he investigates with his dancers just how hip-hop as a cultural “foreign body” musically, physically and socially overwrites memories and by doing so helps physical limitations to be overcome in interaction with traditions.
